Studies on yield enhancement of Pleurotus sapidus (Schulz.) Sacc.

Experiments were conducted to investigate uses of the ultra violet (UV) radiation, vent tubes in the bed substrate with sodium hydroxide on the yield of Pleurotus sapidus. The fully grown spawn bottles were exposed to ultra violet radiation for different durations. The result revealed that UV light exposure for 35 minutes on spawn bottles was more suitable for early spawn run and recorded the maximum yield and biological efficiency. Provision of vent tubes to the mushroom beds enhanced the spawn run and number of sporophytes. Among the different treatments, Provision of vent tubes of 15 mm and 20 mm dia. with 18 and 16 holes respectively recorded the maximum biological efficiency. Similarly, sodium hydroxide treatment to be bed substrate also proved very useful in enhancing the yield and the level of 2% treatment recorded the highest biological efficiency of Pleurotus sapidus.
