Haematological indices of Oroechromis niloticus fed Crude Extract Mangifera indica Leaf

Israel O. Obaroh and Jibrin N. Keta and Dalhatu Y. Bawa

This study was carried out to determine the haematological indices ofOreochromis niloticus fed sub-lethal concentrations of crude extract ofMangifera indica leaf. Fish were fed sub-lethal concentrations of the crude extract at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 gkg-1 diets (the control group was fed with the basal diet 0.0 gkg-1) for 56 days, the LD50 was 73.32 gkg-1. PCV, RBC, Hb and WBC were observed to increase as the concentrations of the crude extract increased, while progressive decrease in the platelets, neutrophils and lymphocytes were observed as the concentration of the plant extract increased. Female haematological indices were slightly higher than the male fish species. There were variations in the haematological indices across all the groups. All parameters were observed to be within the normal range. This study infers thatMangifera indica leaf extract posses hematopoietic properties at sub-lethal concentrations.
