Comparative studies on phytochemical analysis, relative antioxidant potential and free radical scavenging activity from different parts of plant Tridax procumbens

Tridax procumbens is a plant rich in alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics and other potential source of compounds having beneficialrnbiological activities. The increasing interest in the powerful biological activity of this plant outlined the necessity of determiningrntheir content in medicinal herbs. The present investigation is therefore aimed to have a comparative evaluation of the antioxidantrnpotential, free radical scavenging and phytochemical analysis of the different organs (leaf, stem, and flower) of the plant T.rnprocumbens in methanol, chloroform, hexane and water extract. Efforts are also made to compare the activity of enzymic antioxidantsrnin leaf, stem and flower of the plant. Antioxidant and free radical scavenging ability was observed by using ABTS and DPPH assays.rnThe FRAP and Phosphomolybdenum assays was performed for reducing ability of different extracts of the plant. The methanolicrnextract of flower of Tridax procumbens exhibited the highest antioxidant and free radical scavenging ability compared with otherrnextracts of different parts of plant. While FRAP and phosphomolybdenum assays showed maximum activity in hexane andrnchloroform extract of flower. The amount of total phenol, flavonoids, ascorbic acid analysed to relate and compare antioxidantrnproperties. Studies on peroxidase, catechol oxidase, laccase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, GST were also performed. The nonenzymicrnantioxidants i.e. Ascorbic acid, total phenols and flavonoids content was also found to be highest in the flower. The observedrnantioxidant ability of T. procumbens may be due to abundant presence of phenolic contents and high electron donating ability tornneutralize free radicals. Overall results of these analysis shows that the plant has rich sources of antioxidant and scavengingrnproperties.
