Role of macrophytes in heavy metal removal through rhizo-filtration in aquatic ecosystem

Heavy metalrnpollution in an aquatic ecosystem due to anthropogenic activities poses a majorrnthreat to its viability and environmental sustainability. The present study isrnan attempt to investigate metal accumulation potential of metals Cd, Fe andrnbiochemical aspects of aquatic macrophytes Eichhornia crassipes and Traparnnatans as a model phytoremediation tool. Investigations have been carriedrnout using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and biochemical parameters ofrnChlorophyll, Protein, Proline, Malondialdehyde (MDA), Nitrate and Nitriterncontent. Our observations indicate that Eichhornia crassipes have highrnaccumulation efficiency of Fe over Trapa natans. Among the plant parts,rnroots showed the high metal accumulation potential as compared to shoot.rnHowever on high concentration, metal accumulation photosynthetic pigments andrnprotein content is reduced. A promotive effect on amino acid (proline content)rnand enzyme activities (Malondialdehyde content) has been observed under metalrnaccumulation stress possibly because of altered membrane properties andrnenhanced lipid per oxidation pathway. The result shows that phytoremediationrnusing these two model macrophytes is an efficient and economic strategy, andrnthese species have enormous potential to reduce heavy metal stress in aquaticrnecosystem however it affects biochemical indicators.
