Antioxidant activity in leaves of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) varieties desi and kabuli (on dry matter basis) in India

All the four varieties (C-235) and (HC-1 and HK-1) and (HK-1) were taken for the present study for their leaves for antioxidant activity. In the present study phenolic compounds were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher in leaves of both the desi varieties collected at 45 and 60 days after sowing. Similar trend for phenolic compounds was observed in leaves of both the kabuli varieties. Diphenyl-I-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and flavonoids activity also increased in leaves of both the desi and kabuli chickpea varieties as the growth period of leaves increased. Phenolic compounds DPPH free radical scavenging activity and flavonoids in leaves of HK-1 were maximum i.e. 2.02 mg /GAE (HK-1, 45 DAS), 8.04 per cent (HK-2, 60 DAS) and 1.98 mg / g (HK-2, 60 DAS), respectively.
