Growth studies on the utilization of waste flue gas from natural gas power plant and produced water from oil fields of Assam using freshwater oleaginous microalage Scenedesmus obliquus

Flue gas from the natural gas turbine power plant containing 15% CO2, mixed with Produced water (PW)/Formation water (FW) from refinery waste is used to cultivate Scenedesmus obliquus in 20L low cost serially connected photobioreactors at a ranging pH of 7.5-10. During the 12months study period, it was observed that the growth rate was much higher to those which use commercial CO2 and in addition high concentration of Urea and Phosphate in produced water have significant on enhanced growth and lipid content. The micro algal strain obtained maximum specific growth and lipid production of 1.9743 d-1 and 0.47 gL-1 respectively. The Biodiesel obtained have 40% oleic acid among the other fatty acids. The present result has showed that S. obliquus is appropriate for sequestrating CO2 from flue gas, assimilating important nutrient from produced water for biomass and lipid production and can be used for cost effective extensive cultivation.
