Screening of local genotypes in Bhendi (Abelmoschus esculentus [L.] Moench) for shoot and fruit borer resistance
R Eswaran, V Anbanandan
An investigation was carried out with fifteen local germplasms to assess the fruit and shoot borer resistance in bhendi. The results revealed that the genotypes Namakkal local and Mukthir performed well with high fruit yield per plant and high marketable yield. These two genotypes also showed high level of resistance towards fruit and shoot borer resistance. The relative degree of resistance also reveals that there is differential response to fruit and shoot borer infestation in all the genotypes studied although the pest causing causing damage was same. The genotypes Namakkal local and Mukthir can be used as a parent for developing fruit and shoot borer resistant genotypes in bhendi.
