Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the challenges militating against mechanization of yam production in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State and possible suggestions were offered. Oyi Local government of Area of Anambra State of Nigeria was known as “food basket” of the State majoring in yam production. However, the gap existing between the previous level of yam production and its current level is causing concern. Among of the constraints identified during the study militating against mechanization of yam production in the study area are: absence of farm machineries and equipment, poor access to credit facilities, absence of Extension workers, absence of farm inputs such as fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, withdrawal of youths from the farms and migration to urban areas resulting in fewer hands handling agricultural production thus increasing labour cost, high cost of seed yams, urbaniz gross reduction of land for yam production at the instance of urbanization.
