Biomineralization activity of mantle cells of Paphia malabarica under the influence of calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
Marc Ndayisenga
Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3)is believed to influence mantle cells-mediated biomineralization in P. malabarica. In the present study, this chemical in a concentration of 100 mM or 10 mMwas tested with L-15 medium to establish mantle cells primary culture for evaluation of its effect on biomineralization. Primary culture inoculated with media composition without CaCO3 was also designed to serve as Control experiment. Results were collected through an inverted microscope-Olympus (Model no. CKX41). Our findings show that CaCO3 influence biomineralization by increasing the rate of crystal deposition in primary culture of mantle cells of P. malabarica. Moreover, our results demonstrated that mantle cells are generally involved in crystal nucleation, growth and remodeling.
